Meet our designer
She is the designer behind the jewelry of My Silver Is Gold. After moving to Sweden she co-founded the jewelry brand, allowing her to combine her artistic design talents, with her love of handcrafting.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
I usually get my inspiration from many raw forms of art, rather than existing jewelry. Whether it’s sculpture, craft works, photography, films, or graphic design… For me, true art is like true food. You need to select the right ingredients and have the patience to let it cook. That way, it will always be far more nourishing than fast food.
WHY DID YOU GET INTO JEWELRY DESIGN?
I always enjoyed the handcrafting process. I can see so many possibilities when I touch and form materials with my own hands. I was just never quite sure where to focus my attention. And I hesitated for a long time… I want more people to enjoy wearing my jewelry. On the other hand, I’m in love with the creative process.
About 5 years ago I started thinking, maybe I could research and create jewelry concepts in an artistic way. Since then my dream has been to create aesthetically pleasing and easy-to-wear jewelry for peoples’ daily lives.
MOVING FROM CHINA TO EUROPE MUST HAVE BEEN A BIG DECISION TO MAKE. WHAT WAS IT THAT ATTRACTED YOU TO SWEDEN?
Even though China has a long history of metal and jewelry craft, jewelry as an ‘art form’ is still quite new. It had only been around for a decade or so when I was there. I wanted to learn and experience the art form its source. I knew of two of the most influential contemporary jewelry artists: Gijs Bakker and Ruudt Peters. I was so curious about their creative philosophies and their artwork really captivated me. That’s why I moved to Sweden and studied at the metal department of Konstfack in Stockholm.
WHAT MAKES MY SILVER IS GOLD DIFFERENT IN THE VERY COMPETITIVE JEWELRY MARKET?
First of all, we come from outside of Sweden and the European market. While this has made it harder to get established, it has also forced us to keep questioning ourselves and questioning what we’re aiming for. We have to act dynamically, consistently improvising and adapting.
Secondly, every design piece begins with a ‘handmade idea,’ conceived and crafted in the studio. This is how I like to work. Rather than starting out with a sketch, I like to consider all the physical features… Including the weight, material, textures and so on form the very beginning. This, I feel, makes our jewelry incredibly vivid, distinct and unique. But more importantly, it makes our jewelry retain that ‘handcraft connotation.’
And finally, we’ve managed to develop an amazing and direct relationship with our production partners, meaning our items benefit from excellent quality at reasonable prices.
WHAT ARE YOUR LONG-TERM GOALS FOR MY SILVER IS GOLD?
In my personal opinion, good jewelry pieces should make the wearer feel effortless… Make the user feel happy to be themselves. By wearing our pieces, I hope our customers can feel confident and chic, without ever having to worry about being overdressed, or cliché.
My desire is for My Silver is Gold to become an excellent companion for our customers. Not a brand that makes them follow fashion trends… But rather a mirror to themselves that listens to them, inspires them, grows in harmony with them… And eventually, represents them.
